Art with a Heart’s mission is to enhance the lives of people in need through visual art.

Art with a Heart brings its visual art programs to abused, neglected and abandoned children; homeless people; battered women and their children; pregnant adolescents; mentally and physically disabled adults; low-income senior citizens; elementary, middle, and high school students; youth in after-school programs; and children receiving long-term health care.

Through Art with a Heart’s decade of community presence, Baltimore’s underserved children, youth, and adults have access to positive and productive programming, caring and nurturing adults on a consistent basis, and the chance to embrace new ideas and skills in a safe and structured environment.

Community Service Internship
The Community Service Intern should:

  • have a keen interest and personal commitment to Art with a Heart’s mission.
  • have personal qualities of commitment, integrity, and sensitivity to the needs of others.
  • be culturally sensitive and able to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • have college-level coursework in the visual arts, education, social work or family studies fields.
  • graphic design capabilities

General Responsibilities
Group Service Days: Help plan and implement a group service project. May take place at office or on site.

  • Gather/pack supplies in preparation for project
  • Create sample and steps for instruction
  • Provide motivation and tips to participants
  • Assist with clean-up and return of supplies

Office Volunteers: Work with students and ADULTS who earn service hours by volunteering in the office.

  • Remind volunteers to sign in and out on their time sheets
  • rovide motivation and tips to volunteers
  • Assist with clean-up and return of supplies

Mosaics: Creating large-scale mosaic murals with groups of volunteers

  • Help digitize sketches and incorporate ideas into designs
  • Attend evening and weekend workshops
  • Assist with mixing grout/adhesive, glass-cutting, breaking/sorting tiles, and transportation of panels
  • Remind volunteers to sign in with contact information
  • Assist with clean-up and return of supplies
  • Write thank-you notes to volunteers

Centerpieces: Assist with creating artful decorations for individuals and community partnership events

  • Identify and gather supplies needed for centerpieces
  • Create samples for feedback
  • Determine specific steps for volunteer participation
  • Assist with assembly and delivery of centerpieces

Heartwares: Work at Art with a Heart’s Retail Shop & Service Learning Venue

  • Assist with merchandising; including window displays, shelf arrangements and tagging
  • Organize supply room, back stock and packaging materials
  • Create project samples and gather supplies for workshops and art parties
  • Assist with event set-up and clean-up
  • Greet and educate customers about Art with a Heart, and assist with transactions

Program Internship

Art with a Heart, Inc. (AWAH) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people in need through visual art. AWAH brings its visual art classes to vulnerable children, youth and adults in schools, shelters, group homes, community centers, permanent housing facilities, hospitals, and senior facilities. Since its inception in March 2000, AWAH has grown from four classes a week to 10,000 classes a year and has added a multitude of other initiatives. AWAH also engages over 4,000 volunteers annually in various community service and public art efforts.

Desired Skills and Characteristics
Art with a Heart interviews and selects interns each semester to assist with programming in and out of schools, community service activities, workforce development, and organizational administration. Interns work directly with Art with a Heart staff, volunteers, assistants, and teachers in preparing for and delivering art classes to the community, assisting with community service projects, supporting the workforce development program and working in Art with a Heart’s store (HeARTwares) and general program and office administration.
