Employer Profile: Center Stage, Baltimore, MD

Under the leadership of playwright, actor, and director Kwame Kwei-Armah OBE (Artistic Director) and national arts leader Stephen Richard (Managing Director), Center Stage is an artistically driven institution committed to engaging, entertaining, and enriching audiences of today and tomorrow through joyous and bold performance. The professional, nonprofit theater company is dedicated to the creation and presentation of a dynamic and diverse array of new and classic work, and each year hosts an audience of more than 100,000 in its historic home in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood. With its signature focus on civic and community engagement, Center Stage, The State Theater of Maryland, enters its second 50 years with a commitment to exploring how art and entertainment communicate in the 21st century, and to igniting conversation in Baltimore and beyond.

For more than 25 years, Center Stage has helped cultivate the next generation of theater makers through its Professional Internship Program. This highly competitive program helps bridge the gap between university and professional theater by providing early-career artists and administrators with hands-on experience and guidance. Center Stage welcomes a new class of roughly 20 different administrative, artistic, and production interns each season.

Center Stage’s part-time and summer internships provide hands-on experience for students currently enrolled in middle school, high school, or college who are interested in exploring theater as a career. Each internship is designed around the student’s interests by providing real-life experience working alongside theater professionals in nearly every department of the theater.

Center Stage will work with each individual student to determine an appropriate curriculum, schedule, and department to work with based on the experience and interests of the student and the needs of each Center Stage department. Computer literacy is required for administrative positions.
