Employer Profile: Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation


Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation was established in 1979 to promote and support multi-state arts programming. Over the years, MAAF has built a core of program initiatives designed to address specific issues of regional, national and international arts support. We do this by:

  • Expanding access to the arts
  • Exploring new forms of creative expression and presentation
  • Providing leadership in the development of new models and partnerships
  • Expansion of markets for artists and their work
  • Providing resources to enable organizations to expand audiences
  • Exploring new ways for artists and organizations to enhance operational and creative practices
  • Representing best practices in management and governance


Our programming focuses on performing arts touring, jazz, the traditional arts, international engagement, filmmaking and touring, and artist fellowships.

Among its many services, MAAF administers the Individual Artist Awards (IAA) program for the state arts councils of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware.  This artist fellowship program recognizes artistic excellence across disciplines with awards given in alternating years in visual arts, music, dance, theatre, literary arts and interdisciplinary arts.  Annually over 2,000 applications are received and processed for the various states.  We hold 20+ peer review panels in the fall, using highly recognized jurors from across the United States.  The states participating in this partnership award over $1 million to fellowship winners annually.

Internship Positions:

Internships for the IAA program begin in mid-to-late June and continue through August.  Exact start and end dates are negotiable.  MAAF recruits three interns annually and provides each a stipend of $1,000.  Interns gain an understanding of the grantmaking process for individual artists and have a chance to interact with artists from a range of disciplines.  They have primary responsibility for, or participate in: receiving applications and reviewing for completeness; providing technical assistance for applicants; contacting applicants for supplemental materials; and assisting in preparations for panel review.  Interns also receive a broad introduction to other functions of the organization.  While at MAAF, interns are considered staff members for the duration of the internship and attend all staff and board meetings, workshops, etc. as feasible.
