Employer Profile: Muscular Dystrophy Association

MDA is a voluntary health agency founded in 1950 by adults with neuromuscular diseases and parents of children with these disorders. A fundraising organization recognized by the American Medical Association “for significant and lasting contributions to the health and welfare of humanity,” MDA is working to defeat muscle-wasting diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, professional and public health education, and advocacy.

Type of Company: Non-profit

Part Time Positions:
Volunteers are responsible for the safety and well being of the camper with whom they are paired. In addition, the volunteer will assist with the care of the campers in his/her cabin, group and campwide. Volunteers are encouraged to develop age appropriate relationships with campers.

Volunteers have very little “down time” during the day. At night, volunteers are sleeping in a cabin with campers and the same gender volunteers. A number of campers need assistance during the night.

Volunteers may need to assist campers with activities of daily living such as eating, showering, dressing and toiletting.

MDA Camp can be a wonderful experience for volunteer counselors. It is important to realize that is not an experience without challenge. Volunteers must have the ability to put the needs of others first. The health, safety and well being of our campers is the first priority.
